Thanksgiving Memories
I don't know how she squeezed that long string of card tables together and fit in all those people. But my cousins and I always loved it! We usually stayed in the bedroom playing, and occasionally an adult would come in and warn us to be quiet so the downstairs neighbors wouldn't be disturbed.
There wasn't much we could do during the actual dinner to cause trouble because we were usually separated and trapped between parents and various aunts and uncles. Once you were at that gigantic table squeezed into that livingroom, it was almost impossible to move. My grandmother didn't go in for a children's table. Which was probably smart as we tended to misbehave less when we were separated.
After dinner, sometimes the adults would play cards, while us kids would return to playing in the bedroom.
Many years later, I tried to replicate those dinners. But it was soon clear that I had no talent for cooking turkey. So, I've sensibly stepped aside for my sister-in-law who does. Also sensibly, I bring store bought cakes (or cup cakes this year) to share.
What are your favorite memories of Thanksgiving? Or are you still building them with your kids or significant other?
And what's your favorite pie??? Without a doubt apple pie is my favorite... a la mode, of course! I know you're supposed to have pumpkin and mince, but I'd just prefer to skip them.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on TV is also a tradition for us. We especially enjoy the musical numbers from the Broadway shows. With those new pedestrian walk-ways they put in, I hear they're going to be changing the parade route a bit this year.
I noticed yesterday on VHl that Alicia Keys is featuring those red stairs over the Tkts Booth on Broadway that I talked about last week. The song on the video is "Empire State of Mind." So, I'm not the only one who likes them. LOL
Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone!!!
Have a Great Day! And a Great Weekend!
And don't go too wild on Black Friday!

My most special memories are Thanksgiving at home with mom and dad. We continued to go long after we were grown. Nobody made Thanksgiving dinner like mom did. I was wise to learn all of her secrets. Mom and Dad are gone now, and everyone comes to my home for Thanksgiving. It's just like moms used to be.
Have a terrific day and a very Happy Thanksgiving. :)
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Sandee, your Thanksgiving memories past and present sound wonderful! It's great that you can still carry it on!
Kathie, thank you for dropping by! You have a wonderful Thanksgiving too!
I loved hearing of your memories of past Thanksgiving. I have a funny memory of one year as a child. My grandparents usually hosted our Thanksgiving gathering and they always had cold apple cider to drink. Well, by accident one year my grandmother bought apple vinegar and when everyone toasted and took a sip, they almost spit it out. It was funny and talked about for many years.
BTW, I grew up on Long Island in Lindenhurst across from the boat docks where the clam diggers took off each morning. I also lived in Mt. Vernon for a time and went to nursing school at Westchester County Medical Center. My niece lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and works in a hair salon in Soho.
Small world isn't it?
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and btw, my favorite is pumpkin pie.
Debbie
Happy Thanksgiving. I'm not much into pumpkin pie but my husband loves it. I prefer apple pie.
Debbie, I love the story about your grandmother and the apple vinegar! LOL
Welcome to a former New Yorker! And all the best to your neice in Brooklyn!
Loree, Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your apple pie! And tell your husband to enjoy his pumpkin pie!
I'm hoping for apple pie today. But if no one brings it, I'll search one down during the weekend. LOL
We didn't celebrate Thanksgiving when I was growing up in Canada. They have a Thanksgiving but we didn't celebrate it. Now we take the opportunity to eat a lot of food but I don't feel the spirit.
My favourite pie is sugar pie. For those that are not familiar, it's like the inside of a pecan pie only sweeter. A very close second would be Shoo Fly Pie, an Amish delight. Also very sweet.
Off to my mom's for a lot of eating!! I work in an industry that NEVER closes so I'm just lucky this falls on my day off.
Thanks for sharing those memories with us. I always enjoy reading personal stories on blogs. Hope you had a great day. One thing I have never done before is to watch the Parade on TV. I guess it is because I am too busy cooking, but one day I would love to just sit and watch TV. Maybe next year..fingers crossed!
ChezChani, I've never heard of sugar pie. But I love pecan pie! sugar pie is like the inside of pecan pie only sweeter? Wow! That's sweet! We usually put ice cream on our pecan pie to cue the down on the sweetness. Or at least that's the story we're using. LOL I've heard of Shoo Fly Pie, but I've never had it.
Hope you got plenty of pie yesterday!
Brenda, I'm sorry you don't get to see the parade. I missed part of it yesterday because I over slept. LOL It really is a lot of fun. I hope you get to take some time off and enjoy it some day. But cooking for a house load of guests is a lot of work. Hope you had a Great Day!
I love apple pie and pecan pie.
Unknown Mami, all this talk of pecan pie is making me want some. LOL I haven't made it in years. Maybe it's time.
We finally caught up with some applie pie yesterday.
Those were wonderful Thanksgiving memories, thank you for that. I love apple pie too, but I love every pie that comes to mind. If I had to choose one.... I think every day I'd have a different answer but today it would be pecan :)
Diane, LOL, I know exactly what you mean. Though I think I'm especially fond of apple pie. My husband likes blueberry too.
This was a special Thanksgiving for me. My half-sister, whom I've only met three times, came for the holiday. We stayed up until 3 or 4 each night getting to know each other. I think we like each other.
I hope you had a good one.
Sharon, I'm so happy for you and your sister! It sounds like you both had a very special holiday!
oh what wonderful Memories!!! Hope you had a wonderful holiday!!!
Thanks for sharing these with us!!!
Thank you, Diana! I hope you have a wonderful holiday season as well!
We were so blessed to actually GO to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year!!! It was amazing. Some of my earliest memories of Thanksgiving include watching that parade with my grandpa, and now that he's passed away I felt a special connection with him being there. I am looking forward to being stationed closer to family next year to celebrate with family again...it's been years since we've celebrated Thanksgiving together. We've always had to choose Thanksgiving or Christmas to take leave, and Christmas always wins out. I loved reading your post...the memories are so precious.
Beautiful, beautiful memories. This post was a joy to read, brought back some precious memories for me too.
Thanks for sharing this lovely post.
i finally thanked you for the award on my blog! :)
Stacey, I'm glad you were able to feel close to your grandfather at the parade. Those must be wonderful memories. And I'm glad you're going to be living near family again. Have a great holiday!
Shelli, you are so very very welcome!
Dellgirl, I'm glad my posting brought back some precious memories for you too. I found myself looking at some old family photos today and it was nice to visit with the memories.
What great memories :o) Oh! It is always fun to get together with all the extended family! The more the better! I would love to live nearer to our families to get together...but with my hubby's family in Hawaii and my dad in Wisconsin...that hasnt worked out. But we are blessed to get together whenever we can. My hubby's fav is his mom's pumpkin pie bars, with a shortbread base.
Thank you so much for dropping by! After being out of the loop for so long, I'm afraid that others have not been by, so sure do miss the comments!
Thank you for the birthday wishes to our daughter-Girly Whirly (Little Miss).... Our older daughter-Girly Twirly (theLuckiestMrs.) is the one that has a blog and has been married almost one full year :o) Time sure does pass quickly! She and her hubby went to New York City for their "mini-moon" (they had a very short break for a honeymoon right after Jan 1st and had an amazing time in NY...they took their longer honeymoon later in the summer :o)
Personalized Sketches, I'm sorry I mixed up your daughters. Girly Whirly (Little Miss) and Girly Twirly (The Luckiest Mrs)! Happy Birthday to Girly Whirly! And congratulations on an almost one year anniversary to Girly Twirly! Winter is a great time for a wedding and an anniversary! And they were so smart to take two honeymoons! LOL
